Frequently Asked
Questions

What programs are available?

We have programs for students of all ages! Check out our Programs pages for more information.

Are your programs just for girls?

Our programs are designed to help girls and boys engage in STEM. Girls of Steel does not discriminate on the basis of gender, gender identity, or sexual orientation. Students of any gender are equally welcome to participate.

When do programs start?

We typically open applications in the summer. Our 7th-12th grade program starts in the fall and goes through spring. Our advanced program starts in winter and goes through spring. Different FLL programs run throughout the year. See more on our Programs page.

Where do you meet?

We’re located in Pittsburgh, PA. We meet at an old warehouse building located near Bakery Square, which is near Squirrel Hill, East Liberty, and Homewood.

Can Girls of Steel come work with our school program?

We do outreach activities year-round and we’re always looking for groups and people to do activities for and with. Visit our Outreach pages to learn more.

Can I see the robot competitions?

FIRST competitions are open to the public, and you can check out any of the FIRST LEGO League, FIRST Tech Challenge, or FIRST Robotics Competition events!

How do I join?

We release applications to join our longer programs (like our 7th-12th program or our 4th-6th program) over the summer, and our summer camps around May. We generally don’t accept students mid-season as they’d have to catch up on a lot of knowledge the other students had already learned.

Can I tour the building?

We let other teams use our space as we have one of the few full-sized fields in the region. We also let prospective members come meet us and see our space. Feel free to reach out if you want a tour!

Do I need knowledge of robots, machine shop tools, or programming?

Nope! Our programs are designed to teach all the skills students need and assume no knowledge coming in.
